With this elegant canopy roof the lengthy redesign of Salzburg Main Station has been successfully concluded with a high-spirited gesture. Back in 1986 a competition was set up for the redesign of the Salzburg Main Station site, which was won by the office of Joachim Schürmann from Cologne. But -a familiar story in Salzburg - the aims had been set too high and only part of the project could be carried out. In 1999 a further competition was held, this time kadawittfeldarchitektur emerged as the winners. Whereas in the course of what is known as the "Austrian Federal Railways train station offensive" contemporary stations had long since been completed in Linz or Innsbruck, in Salzburg travellers were still being subjected to tortuous inconveniences due to the outdated infrastructure.
