Original building fabric To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Holderlin the building on Nordheimer Strafte in Lauffen am Neckar that is believed to be the house in which he was born was to be converted into a museum. In 1730 Jakob Friedrich Holderlin, grandfather of the famous poet, became administrator of the local monastery. Directly beside the eastern monastery wall there was a house with a large basement, a barn, and a yard. By 1750 Jakob Friedrich Holderlin had extended what had once been a simple farmhouse and made it into a bourgeois Baroque home that reflected his social position. Holderlin's family lived here until the death of his father. His mother then married again and with her children moved to Niirtingen. Friedrich Holderlin was four years old at the time. The house has undergone few alterations. Historical studies revealed a few well-preserved elements dating from the time of Holderlin. Traces of the original colours were found in the walls and the original layout of the spaces had survived. The central staircase installed by Holderlin's grandfather had also remained unaltered. In one of the living rooms the oak floorboards have been preserved; on the upper floor the decorative ceiling plasterwork indicates that a high-quality interior was made for owners who were conscious of their social status. The vaulted cellar with the house well along with several walls date from the original building, which was erected around 1580.
