The annual Serpentine Pavilion is one of the most exciting global platforms for experimental architecture. Located in London's Kensington Gardens, from June to October, it is a great opportunity for people to get up close with architecture, as visits to the pavilion are free and open to all. For architects it is a coveted commission to build their first structure in England. The list to-date features many of the world's greatest architects -includingthe late Zaha Hadid,Toyo Ito, Frank Gehry, Oscar Niemeyer and Peter Zumthor -as well as rising stars such as Smiljan Radic, Sou Fujimoto and Frida Escobedo.A Simple and Unchanged Brief For the 2019 Serpentine Pavilion, the selection team led by CEO Yana Peel and Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist, have chosen 44-year-old Japanese architect Junya Ishigami who had worked at SANAA before setting up practice in 2004. Ishigami will unveil his design on 20 June and is the 19th participant and 4th Japanese architect to design a Serpentine Pavilion, following on from Toyo Ito in 2002, SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa) in 2009, and Sou Fujimoto in 2013.
