摘要

The outstanding but mostly not widely recognised social significance and innovative power of engineers in the construction sector is given a long-overdue stage by the exhibition "Visionaries and Unsung Heroes: Engineers - Design - Tomorrow". The products of their work are indispensable to our civilisation, but as long as everything in our day-to-day lives works as it should, we perceive them only in passing. They are in demand like we haven't seen in a long time, yet we lack a precise image of what they actually do: civil and structural engineers get their due in a fruitful exhibition that will close some knowledge gaps, presented by the Chamber of Architects and Chartered Engineering Consultants of Upper Austria and Salzburg, in cooperation with the Initiative Architektur in Salzburg. The exhibition, which was jointly produced by the Oskar von Miller Forum of Munich and the Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst NRW, is on view for the first time in Austria, where it is supplemented by a look back at the pioneers of tunnel construction in Salzburg. The show is divided into two parts: Current examples of outstanding engineering achievements are documented in the rooms of the Initiative Architektur in Sinnhubstraße. Arranged into three themed sections - Transport & Mobility, Water & Energy, and Space & Enclosure - photos, graphics, models and videos tell the stories behind the development of innovative key projects and explain their technical features in a concise way that is understandable even for non-experts. At the same time, this part gives attention to the technical innovations that were necessary prerequisites for the various develop- ments, and also even raises the question of their social relevance. The array of projects from around the world, chosen with the support of an expert advisory board, stakes out the fields where there is the greatest need for innovation today and probably also in the future.
