摘要

固く重い地球の表面が実は今も動いていること、我々の命や営みが自然の前ではこのうえなく小さく、人間が制御できないものがなお多く残っていることを、決して忘れてはならないと思う。あの宮古の石碑に残された悲壮な戒めの言葉―「高き住居は児孫の和楽。想へ惨禍の大津浪、此処より下に家を建てるな。明治二十九年にも昭和八年にも津波は此処まで来て部落は全滅し、生存者、僅かに前に二人後ろに四人のみ。%That the rigid and heavy crust of the Earth is still moving, that in the face of nature our lives and undertakings are indescribably small, and that there is still much that cannot be controlled by man - these are things that I think we should never forget.
