Going Into the Sacred-Designing for the Half Light

The two principle ingredients of the Mapungubwe design are central to searching for a quality of light-the Cave (darkened half light) and slatted Light (filtered light) When climbing the actual Mapungubwe hill (located 1km to the north of the Interpretation Center site and Mesa), one experiences a loss of the sacred, due to successive generations of archeological removals of sand from the top of the hill. The design of the Interpretation Center needs to conjure the emotion of entering the sacred in the visitor, be it before or after the actual visit to Mapungubwe hill.
