Open-Source Urbanism

The Data-Driven City contrasts, but is not dissimilar from the term Smart City, a catchword promoted by IT companies and consultancies who offer to embed urban infrastructure with intelligent technology, to build the automated, responsive and streamlined metropolis of the future. However, the Smart City has notable critics, who argue cities - even those struggling with development, like Murnbai - are already imbued with the intelligence and resourcefulness of their user-citizens. They are part of a movement advocating for the open and unrestricted exchange of data, arguing that, unlike proprietary closed systems, innovative solutions to our cities problems canrnpercolate from the bottom-up, as well as from the top-down.
