Interview: Living Models

Tomoko Sakamoto (Sakamoto): Please tell us from the beginning about your experience at Enric Miralles + Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT). I understand you were admitted as an architect. I was at EMBT office for two years from 1998 to 2000, and cooperated with you on a variety of projects. What I find the most memorable is that, among many model builders working in the office, Enric saw you not as a model builder but as an architect. I remember that Enric truly respected you as an architect who builds models, expresses and communicates his design through models instead of drawings. There were moments during meetings where you would say, "Wait a second, let me make a model", and began carving wood, then proposed, "Don't you think it's better this way?" And, Enric would say, "You're right. It works out well." There was an instant understanding, and the project would proceed.
