We have just completed the second volume of our Sauerbruch Button: Archive monographs and thus have had plenty of opportunity to reflect on the natwure of our past work. Confronted with a+u's request to think about Berlin, I realize that we have never attempted to understand our relationship to the location in which our architectural thinking emerged. Both born elsewhere (Matthias Sauerbruch in the south of Germany, Louisa Hutton in the East of England), we have made Berlin our home in 1993. To what extent it might also be our architectural point of reference, I shall speculate about in this essay.
