Situated in one of the most cultural cities of Thailand, Chiang Mai, MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum aims to brighten up the art scene in Thailand and the region as the first contemporary art museum in the country. The private museum, founded by the Bunnag-Beurdeley family, holds one of the most significant collection of contemporary art in Thailand and Southeast Asia. An old warehouse on a highway in a crafts district is transformed into a house of art, a quiet but well-equipped platform for wide range of cultural activities, with an attempt to keep the industrial spirit in order to mark a continuity with the past of the place. A new circulation system with different types of gallery space to accommodate different types of art is achieved through the insertion of a new steel structure detached from the old one. The building aims to act as a background for art works, not the protagonist. Art actions can intervene in every space. Natural light for art space is achieved through simple local industrial materials and constructions with sophisticated calculations.
