Crucifixion Chapel

There's a popular Chilean saying: "An animita is a trap for the soul, a sort of obligatory resting place." But we also know that an animita is a shrunken chapel where the bereaved remember their dead with flowers and candles. We could say that an animita is a solid nenia. We often find them abandoned on the sides of roads, dressed like a miniature circus in colorful garb or with the austerity of a temple (figs. 74-75).
