La Seine Musicale

The site on Ile Seguin (Seguin Island) is river island with an area of some 115,000 m~2 in the middle of the Seine River, which surrounds the city of Boulogne-Billancourt and adjoins western Paris. Remembered by the French as the location of the Renault automobile factory, the island symbolized French industry during the 20th century, but the factory closed in 1992. The redevelopment plan went through several changes, before the Pinault Foundation finally held a competition for a contemporary art museum in 1999. Tadao Ando won the competition and construction work began. The relationship between Mr. Pinault and the government deteriorated, however, and the project was cancelled in 2005. Mr. Pinault's collection was then moved to Italy, where the Fondation d'Art Contemporain Francois Pinault was completed in Venice, with a renovation by Ando.
