Kagawa Prefectural Government Building (Formerly Main Building, now East Building)

The Kagawa Prefectural Government Office (formerly Main Building, now East Building), which exerted significant influence on the design of postwar modernist public buildings, was completed in 1958. An existing old building that stood to the west of the site at completion has since been demolished, making way for the new headquarters of the Kagawa Prefectural Police (1997), and a new office tower for the Kagawa Prefectural Government (the current main building, 2000), constituting the prefectural government core. When it was deemed necessary to renovate the old Main Building and East Building to make them more quake-resistant, renovations involving a seismic bracing system were also considered. Responding to local community's wish to maintain the appearance of Tange's buildings, a seismic retrofit by Obayashi Corporation is currently being performed. During this renovation, great care is paid to the original intent and modular system when the buildings were first design. Retrofit is expected to be completed at the end of 2019.
