摘要

The Taipei Performing Arts Centre (TPAC), also called as "the Magic Cube", is one of the key cultural projects commissioned by the Taipei City Government and is currently under construction. The project is locally well known by its nickname "Tofu and One-Thousand Year Old Egg", which seems to fit even better in its unique context. The site is located next to the famous Shilin Night Market, a major tourist attraction of Taipei City. This dense and vibrant area provided the design team with the opportunity to redefine the historically static typology of theatre. Rather than a formal and institutional performance space inherited from western classical culture facilities, this venue is defined as a "social condenser". The design is inspired by the Taiwanese famous street food Spicy Stinky Tofu, which contains three dishes cooked in one pot: as a diagram of efficiency and consolidation this metaphor was adopted to create a new typology for transformable performance spaces. TPAC is a machine, the reality of an illusion, a ground full of possibilities.
