Carpentry tools face a stern fate - the best among them are destined to be used until they wear out. During the postwar years of high economic growth, the emergence of mass-produced materials and power tools led to a sharp decline in the number of craftsmen who used manual tools, a tendency that is reinforced today by advances in technology. Carpentry tools were in danger of disappearing. Amid this crisis, the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum, Japan's only museum devoted to carpentry tools, opened in 1984 with the mission of collecting, preserving, studying, and exhibiting this national legacy and passing it down to future generations. In 2014, on its 30th anniversary, the museum moved to a new location long associated with the Takenaka Corporation, and made a new start under the theme "Connecting people with nature and tradition with innovation".
