摘要

Looking for the continuous Japanese "kawara" tiled roofscape at the cityedge, we minimized tree trimming and lowered the height of the building to the utmost. The building is composed of multi-purpose hall on the ground and exhibition space underground. The hall is composed of the wood structure of carpentry covered by the steel structure which sustains the whole roof. The vertical void space with the courtyard brings light into the underground exhibition space and enables the visitors to feel the exterior rich environment. In the conversation with the craftspeople involved with this architecture, such as carpenters, plasterers and tillers, we sought for the finish which explores potentiality of each craftsperson, coming up with the neo-wooden joint and the scraped clay wall. Not only traditional but modern craftsmanship did contribute to this building such as bare concrete slab, highly-functional aluminum ceiling and the staircase of floating wood pieces and thin steel frames. By implanting the craftwork of both old and new into the architecture, we aimed to convey the spirits of craftsmanship.
