For hundreds of years, Hangzhou has been known as one of the most beautiful cities in China, admired especially for the mountains and gardens around West Lake. Today it has another claim to fame - as the home of Alibaba and other high-tech companies. So finding the right expression for a high-profile sports complex in the city required NBBJ's design team to acknowledge a rich cultural legacy while tapping into a spirit of innovation that's driving the local economy in the 21st century. Anchored by an 80,000-seat Olympic-size stadium and a10,000-seat tennis arena, the 400,000-square-meter complex, which will host the 2022 Asian Games, stretches along the Qiantang River less than a mile from the city's new central business district. The project's master plan, designed by NBBJ and China Construction and Design Institute, calls for the site to be developed with three layers of activity - a raised platform or "sports boulevard" linking all of the sports facilities; a ground-level network of paths, gardens, and plazas that lead to public recreation areas for alternative and extreme sports; and a series of sunken spaces and courtyards feeding into below-grade stores, restaurants, and cinemas. The flowing geometries of the plan derive from the fluid lines of the nearby river delta and create a seamless pedestrian experience that weaves together sports and commercial venues. A pair of transportation hubs - one on the east side of the site and one on the west - will connect the complex to the rest of the city via metro trains and buses.
