A companion building to the Shearers' Quarters, Captain Kelly's Cottage is a restoration of an existing weatherboard cottage. The original building had aged; it had deteriorated due to weathering and had been diminished by several unsympathetic alterations. The new work involved the intricate restoration of the original form, with added layers carefully removed. Unique construction techniques were revealed in the process and selectively exposed and emphasized. The original verandah inspired the contemporary architectural intervention - a new living area placed between the two existing structures, the kitchen and bedrooms. The layered soffit and exposed ceiling rafters were continued in the new entry and living spaces to connect new with old.
