David West and Julian Bickersteth discuss the effects of losing traditional trade skills - a major challenge for conserving architectural materials and finishes. The loss of traditional tade skills occurs for many reasons, one of which is the development of new and improved methods of construction over time. As new materials and methods are introduced, tradespeople learn new skills, adapt their trade practices and the older ways are lost.
