The best way to keep a heritage building for future generations is to use it.The Heritage Office, Department of Planning (NSW), has many resources that highlight best practice for heritage management and conservation, and provide guidance for the adaptive re-use of buildings no longer required for their original function. Many heritage items can be altered or extended without diminishing their heritage significance, and their significance can even be reinforced or enhanced by adaptive re-use. The Queen Victoria Building, Capitol Theatre, Walsh Bay and Eveleigh Railway Workshops in Sydney are good examples of successful adaptive re-use.
