Most of us are familiar with the Burra Charter and its emphasis on heritage interpretation as an essential component of conservation. But on complex heritage sites undergoing major redevelopment, can the development process deliver meaningful and understandable heritage interpretation? Is it possible to retain an understanding of the place and legibility of past uses and functions in a way that is meaningful to people?rnThese issues are considered here in the context of three major redevelopment projects involving prominent public hospital sites in Sydney - two former and one existing - each comprising a large number of significant buildings, landscape elements, roads and archaeological features.The development of all three sites has involved detailed heritage input by Godden Mackay Logan Heritage Consultants from the outset of the masterplanning stage.
