摘要

I've known Lindsay [Johnston] for a number of years and have the greatest respect for his contribution to architectural education, but in his letter entitled 'Educational decline' I unfortunately see little of substance. Students in our [University of Newcastle] M.Arch program still have six hours a week contact time and small-sized tutorial groups; lectures also support this discussion and critique. I'm not sure of the 1980s student referred to but current students get more contact, content and critical discussion [today] than I did as a student in the 80s. If lecturers in the 80s were spending 80 per cent of their time teaching, then it is clear that the workload of contemporary academics has been doubled.
