摘要

Structurally, shifting conceptions of the post-Martial Law built environment, along with changes in reception, can be read simultaneously at two different levels: from an architectural point of view concerning political, historical and practical aspects and from a theoretical point of view focusing on social and political aspects. Architectural transformation, and shifts of identification, in the post-Martial Law era began with changes of reception in the historical consensus and in native historiography in the late 1980s, which largely echo through the subsequent movements of Taiwanisation and Name Rectification in Taiwanese society. Previous ideas about seeing historical sites architecturally in the context of 5000 years of Chinese history have been gradually amended to acknowledge the context of 400 years of Taiwanese history. In terms of a 'bottom-up' mobilisation, the preservation of historical sites is a strategy for embodying day-to-day activities in space.
