Tohoku University's Aobayama Campus is located on a hill adjacent to the city of Sendai. The campus stretches from east to west of the hill's ridge. By locating the Center Hall on the hilltop, it aims to link both sides of the campus by forming a new 'ridgeway'. An open circulation space constructed of glass curtain walls named 'Loggia' forms the Center Hall's backbone. While the Loggia acts as the main circulation, together with the linking cafeteria, they provide space for various activities. To the east & west ends of the Loggia are a large lecture hall and a large conference hall. These closed boxes carry the horizontal load allowing the centre section of the Loggia, where the cafeteria and administrative offices are located, to be open with slender structure.
