The theme of this office building was to enjoy the advantages of nature to the fullest extent possible despite its location in a densely built downtown district. On clear days, light from solar collectors on the roof pours down through a long slit lightwell to the hallways on each floor. Sensors capture the temperature, humidity, wind speed and weather conditions outside and green lamps inside the offices light up to inform office workers when the timing is right for natural ventilation. When the windows are opened, stack ventilation carries fresh air from outside through the office hallways and up the lightwell to the exit at the top. Computational fabrication using an algorithm based on the growth of living organisms generated the perforation pattern for the punched-metal panels on the main facade.
