Itsuro Sakisaka is one of Japan s most famous Marxian economist and socialist His house and book collection was donated to Hosei University after his death. Later on after his wife's death, this building was built on the site. The building is mainly used as a guest house for researchers invited from overseas and contains 11 rooms and a conversation lounge. The site is located in a quiet residential area where many trees remained. The concept of this project was to minimize environmental changes to the neighborhood and preserve the area's history. Therefore we saved the remaining trees as much as possible and the new building was designed to blend in with the preserved trees. Stone works and trees saved from the old Sakisaka's house are placed in the garden, which is designed as the symbol of the new building. Also by choosing Japanese style materials the building creates an opportunity to experience Japanese culture for foreign researchers.
