Konica minolta skt, in Hachioji-city, Tokyo, is one of the biggest research facilities for the company with 45 bases in the world. Previously, their digital printing system technology departments were scattering in their Hachioji R&D campus, so the business plan for the building is to consolidate them into one space they can accomplish the whole process from the design, the production to the evaluation. SKT is consisted of three parts, "Solution Plaza" where their clients can find the business solutions, "Knowledge Front" where they collaborate with partner companies, and "Knowledge Court" where KONICA MINOLTA researchers can make innovation happen. The atrium with a big top light in the middle of the building is a core system to encourage the innovation. The axis of the top light is aligned to the north axis to catch the diffuse sunlight as much as possible and the bowl-shaped atrium gives the different characters with natural light to the different floors. The researchers in the different floors will meet up by chance and exchange their ideas in this open atrium and this serendipity can be the strong power to develop new innovations of KONICA MINOLTA.
