CHIGASAKI ZION CHRISTIAN CHURCH / MIHATO KINDERGARTEN

This simple oval church is simple yet sacred protestant church. The shape was designed to create distance between the pastor and the church members reflecting the image of Noah's Ark. An image made by the ex-pastor, who passed away just before construction. It was the church's wish for the pastor and the members to be as close as possible, like family. The alter is located in the wide end of the oval. The wide end represents the welcoming open arms of the church. The building looks like a broad-brimmed hat with a small kindergarten underneath connecting the church to the local community. More than 20,000 thin planks of Cedar wood line the walls, each plank of different thicknesses. Placed carefully, this uneven surface creates a delicate balance between echo and sound absorption, an ideal acoustic environment for the church.
