As designer, I noticed that there were problems lacking of greenery such as pocket gardens and tree planting on the pedestrian space at the Shijo Street and the condition improvement was required. So I elaborated a building with concept of "green cover" in order to create a new standard of the townscape here. The plant changes seasonally, and it becomes group, changing wall surface to a calm texture. Unlike a strictly regulated signboard of Kyoto city, there is no particular regulation for building greenery. The tree planting will give soft visual attraction among the commercial buildings on Shijo Street. At the design process, I studied the green visual attraction by using eyes measurement device also. The full-scale tree planting at the roof would become guideline for increasing tree planting in this area as it could save building energy, using soil and the transpiration of the plant on the roof to restrain heat island effect. Moreover, the topography-like roof creates various resting space, becoming pocket park of the town that be able to look at the Gion festival, as well as applicable to be used as meeting or classroom space. The greenery of the Shijo Street corridor from this design establishes a model for environmental urban development for the city center of Kyoto and it can simultaneously benefiting business, residents, visitors and of course the natural environment.
