%This project is a rebuilding plan of a 827-bed prefectural hospital located in the center of Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. Through a hospilal PFI scheme, we embodied the basic idea of the hospital i.e., "a hospital that becomes a place that the people of the prefecture can rely on" in terms of the facility and the services provided. We adopted a bold rebuilding technique to overhang the new building above the existing building to solve the problem of maintaining all hospital functions during the reconstruction at the narrow site.As a result, we achieved an ideal form and sufficient building volume necessary for the advanced medical services without compromise of the site regulations, with consideration to surrounding area by a setting back the north exterior wall, and a highly hospitable and clear composition of medical sections. In harmony with the surrounding environment, the building is composed of three volumes; i.e.. the low-rise building with vertical slits that reduce the feeling of pressure, a ward building with spacious horizontal lines that seems to unite with the blue sky, and the "Plaza of Light," a bright and airy atrium formed with the ovcrhang.Regarding interior design, we carried out color survey and proactively adopted colors and materials that are familiar in the local area. At the same time, as a central medical facility that functions in case of disasters, the building is equipped with seismic isolation structures, a heliport, and various systems to maintain the building and medical functions so as to enhance the functional continuity of the hospital at the time of a disaster.
