A half-century ago painters like Cy Twombly and Robert Motherwell challenged artistic standards by making lowly scribbles and scrawls into the modern equivalents of Old Master technique. Now Wade Guyton has gone them one better. He's turned an all-too-familiar annoyance-the splotchy, streaky printer malfunction-into high art. In his expansive studio on Manhattan's Lower East Side, Guyton opens up a digital image file he's created on his laptop: a black rectangle, say, a set of stripes, a capital X, or some flames.
