Leon van Schaik places Minifie Nixon's experimental Australian Wildlife Health Centre at Healesville Sanctuary, just outside Melbourne, within the wider context of the city's architectural culture. Melbourne has just been declared - yet again - one of the world's most liveable cities, just behind Vancouver this time. It has been just ahead before. A friend back from five months in Istanbul is revelling in the ease with which he can get about here, even as he shows me photograph after photograph of limpid air over the Bosphorus, and pictures of his family dining under mulberry trees in their back yard on one of Istanbul's many hills. The conversation became a little tiresome, he remarks - all art and politics and no sport! Somehow this vignette says a lot to me about the business of being liveable.
