The work presented in this issue is intended to instigate a discussion regarding the spectrum of materiality found in and around the structures, or geometries and forms, that designers traditionally rely on to define a physical boundary. These 'material energies' of thermal variation, air velocity, light spectra and electricity all have potential roles beyond merely producing moods or effects along a surface. Yet this potential is often explored through little more than metaphors and poetics; worse, it is seen only as a resource for creating preconceived, rule-of-thumb interior comfort zones and energy-efficient buildings.
