Just as agoraphobia is understood as resulting from the trauma of industrialisation and urbanisation in the late 19th- and early 20th-century metropolis, in the 21st century new phobias and subjects will arise along the periphery of the continents and out of the entangling of urbanisation with ecology. Over half of the US population lives near the coast; globally, an estimated 2.75 billion people will live near the ocean's edge by 2025.
