Since 2001, argument in the US over strategy in Afghanistan has lurched between the contradictory doctrines of surge and exit. Like a high-stakes game of poker, to play is to raise or fold. To make a minimum bet and stay in the game is to not really play at all. In Afghanistan, those real men of decisive action want a radical increase in troop numbers and a swift Taliban defeat; or they want an immediate exit and some relief from troop casualties and the sheer financial burden of involvement.
