Some of the most significant changes to the city in the last decades have been made not by architects or planners, but by the new class of urban poor who have occupied, expanded and dramatically changed cities throughout the world. Recent urbanisation has been characterised by poverty and insufficient infrastructures for organising housing, employment and basic living and social needs.
