AUSTERIA: CITY OF MINIMUM CONSUMPTION

Since 1516 when Thomas More first published Utopia and probably earlier, a battle has existed between 'Utopias of sufficiency' and 'Utopias of abundance'. The debate has surrounded the issue of whether less consumption or higher productivity might be the solution for the future. The current economic crisis provides a moment of opportunity to revise current practice when it comes to designing cities: to one that does not ask for city extension and instead urges contraction in order to survive.
