THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION

If necessity drives innovation, then there has never been a more challenging time to be an architect or a greater need for innovative architectural thought. The world is supposedly at a moment of crisis, or a confluence of crises, a perfect storm of ecological, economic and cultural conflicts. We face urgent challenges caused by rapid globalisation and urbanisation, demographic and technological transformations, material and energy scarcities, natural and all-too-human disasters. This is a time for the profession to display seriousness and sobriety, yet it is precisely at such a time that 'speculative' - a word intended to evoke both conjecture and risk - architectural proposals are most valuable.
