Responsive Experimentalism

After the end of the Cultural Revolution, the resurgence of the Committee of Architectural Creation of the Architectural Society of China on 22 October 1978 was a clear signal of the revival of architecture as a creative discipline. In the following years, 'creation' quickly became the predominant keyword to describe the practice of architecture as an art form. In the previous decade of turmoil (1966-1976), the term had been rejected, and educational institutions, professional societies and journals prohibited. As a profession, architecture was instead affiliated with engineering, and architects became engineers. In this context, the architectural renaissance of the early 1980s involved both a fundamental shift in ideas and a comprehensive reformulation of the profession.
