So, where to begin a rant? Firstly we need to stop talking about the grotesque tradition as an opposite - as though it is merely being contrary or outrageous in the face of prevailing manners. As a practice, we would never contemplate a design strategy which sets ourselves against beauty, and the sublime is always paradoxically in the ugly; like the wings of a filthy fly. It's more useful to think of the tradition in terms of the "other", something outside of the prevalent axioms; sufficiently outside to look inwards and see the absurdity of the canon.
