Coming from a rural environment, I was always a protagonist for the soft intervention of buildings into the landscape, and the marrying of landscape with architecture has remained a continuing objective. Another aspiration has been the production of rational, quality-designed housing for the general public. For a time this dream was effectively realised with Merchant Builders, the most progressive and innovative design and constructive group to contribute to housing for Australians. Bower House, a less successful venture, was based on factory-made houses flat-packed for transport to remote locations.
