Crown Street Community Hub Suters Architects

Crown Street Community Hub is an integrated community centre located on a brown field site undertaken for the Hobson's Bay City Council and the West Gate Health Medical Centre. The clients requested the new building seamlessly tie into existing buildings on the site. To this end the long folding eave creates a deep, welcoming entry along its street frontage. The pixellated green soffit panels bring imagery of rolling vegetated lushness to the industrial context. ESD was an integral component to the design with passive, low tech, economic solutions designed into the building fabric from the outset of the project. The client group invested in a thermal storage system of underground water tanks to assist in the heating and cooling of the new facility. This substantially reduces the running costs and the amount of energy consumed over the life of the project.
