In Memoriam AF-J Ylts

The arbitration world lost one of its titans last year. The untimely demise of the universally beloved Johnny Veeder has distracted attention from the disappearance at the same time of Prof Dr Dr AF-J Ylts, whose contributions to the scholarship of the field Johnny did so much to bring to the attention of the rest of us. Prof Dr Dr Ylts began his distinguished career in international arbitration as the secretary to the tribunal in the famous Macao Sardine Case, so ably described by Lord Justice Kerr. Although Ylts's rise through the academic ranks has been described as 'meteoric', and his academic career as 'remarkable', much of his early work has sadly not been available to an English-speaking audience. Professor Park has speculated that this was perhaps due to the inaccessibility of the bibliographies in Ylts's native language. The Ylts scholarship that did find its way into English nevertheless left a lasting impact on the international arbitration community and has been described as 'some of the best materials published' in Arbitration International.
