Intercalation of perfluorobutane sulfonate into layered double hydroxides

ZnMgAl-layered double hydroxides (ZnMgAl-NO_3-LDH) intercalated with perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) were investigated as a new flame retardant for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins. Powder X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectra confirmed the intercalation of PFBS by exchange of nitrate ions. The enhanced performance of the ZnMgAl-PFBS-LDH/ABS composites was possibly due to the high char residue of ZnMgAl-PFBS-LDH. Preliminary combustion tests showed that the ZnMgAl-PFBS-LDH/ABS composites exhibited higher fire retardance and smoke suppression properties compared to ZnMgAl-NO_3-LDH/ABS, ABS containing a physical mixture of ZnMgAl-NO_3-LDH and PPFBS, PPFBS/ABS, and pristine ABS.
