What, you ask, is an Envirophile? It's a term I've cooked up, playing on the suffix phile: loving, liking, favorably disposed to. An Envirophile, then, is a person in love with the environment and committed to preserving it. The industry we serve is loaded with Envirophiles who Design for the Environment and Design for Recyclability. The payoff has been impressive. "More than 42-million appliances were recycled in 1995, with 100 percent of the steel content melted down into new steel," noted Andrew G. Sharkey, III. He is president of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Speaking at the group's general meeting, he added, "In 1995, the appliance steel recycling rate reached a record 74.8 percent."
