When the Toro Co., Min- neapolis, set about de- signing a new line of electric lawn mowers, it made an early commitment to construct the deck portion from plastic instead of metal. Plastic was chosen to provide a lighter weight, corrosion resistance, and lower maintenance requirements. And since a molded part offers the opportunity to combine functions, manufacturing costs could be lowered by consolidating several parts into one. After exploring the physical and mechanical requirements of the part, Toro chose high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for the deck material.
