When defining new products, appliance designers have a choice of prime movers including the universal a.c. commutator, the squirrel cage induction motor, the brushless d.c. motor and switched reluctance (SR) motor. The SR motor is particularly attractive because: 1) Phase windings only require unipolar currents allowing reduced number of power switches in inverter. 2) High efficiency due to no losses on the rotor. 3) High power-to weight ratio. 4) Simple rotor construction is robust and suited to very high speed operation. 5) Brushless construction yields improved reliability. 6) Potentially low manufacturing costs.
