Biofuel project at Norske Skog Tasman

Norske Skog has joined the New Zealand Government in investigating opportunities to produce biofuels from forest residues. The project, to be known as 'Stump to Pump', will cost NZD 13.5 million, including NZD 6.75 million from the Government. Norske Skog and the third partner in the project, Z Energy, are funding the other NZD 6.75 million. The project will be based at Norske Skog's Tasman Mill at Kawerau. "This is an exciting announcement as this partnership between the Government and industry has the potential to make an important economic and environmental contribution to New Zealand," NZ Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce said. "If the technology can be proven and commercialised, the economic benefit for New Zealand over the next 20 to 25 years is estimated at an annual increase in GDP of up to NZD 1 billion and the creation nf 1200 direct johs in regional economies."
