We have come to know "sustainability" as the desirable focus on reuse, recycling, renewable resources, and other environmental matters. Yet, it's important to keep in mind that the definition also includes the concept of being able to continue for a long time-and that can mean much more. Today's highly efficient and lean supply chains can be somewhat fragile. They often have a small amount of inventory, which can make it difficult to maintain operations in the face of disruption. Any cushion is quickly used up, and material flow stops until new supplies are brought into circulation. The extent of the damage is related to recovery time.
