Beneath the apparent calm that is today's undersea warfare environment, the capabilities of submarines are being revolutionized by air-independent propulsion for diesel-electric submarines, new weapons and sensor technologies, new silencing techniques, and, perhaps most significantly, the widespread introduction of unmanned underwater vehicles that could take over some of the more hazardous duties now performed by manned submarines. The use of silencing techniques, originally designed for nuclear boats, has made the latest diesel-electric designs remarkably quiet; at the same time, undersea detection technology has advanced as well, although not as much as submarine technology. Computers continue to pick up processing speed, allowing data to be handled more quickly and accurately. This means that the slight and transient sounds made by a submarine can be disentangled from the background noises of the sea. This enhanced detection capability, along with improved datalink and information dissemination, enables target data to get from the spotter to the shooter with minimum delay.
